This week, we’re excited to speak with Loren Jackson, founder of Loren Jackson Photography. See how she stays on top of this highly-competitive field while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Tell us about your business. What does a typical day look like for you?
I’m a wedding photographer that works from home. When I’m not photographing engagement sessions and weddings, I’m behind my computer blogging, editing, and connecting with new brides.
How many miles do you drive in a typical week? Where do you drive as part of your job?
During wedding season, I report on average 240 miles a week. However, during the months of December to March, I might make 7-10 business-related drives a month. When I do drive for my business, it’s often to a location for an engagement session, wedding, or networking meetings.
What’s changed since you started using MileIQ?
With MileIQ, my mileage tax prep takes me SECONDS instead of HOURS. I’m no longer looking at the past year’s calendar attempting to figure out my mileage. Gone are the days of missing business related drives that are tax write-offs.
What’s a tip for other people you’d like to offer about using MileIQ?
While it may seem feasible to stick with the free option of 40 drives a month, it’s not effective. My biggest regret with MileIQ was not paying for the yearly service sooner. The app catches all my drives and I don’t have to worry about missing drives at the end of the month that are business related. Also, every Monday, you should categorize those trips. It takes less time to do it once a week.
What’s the biggest challenge you face running your business, and how do you address it?
I recently quit my full-time teaching job to work on my business full time from home. So while I may have many challenges, staying focused and turning off Netflix this off-season has been my biggest challenge. I address this challenge by starting the month with my Powersheets Planner, daily to-do lists, and three days going strong in the office.
What do you enjoy the most about the kind of work you do?
I love photographing a couples wedding day. It’s the first day of the rest of their lives together, and there are so many important moments that need to be captured so in the decades to come, children and grandchildren can see where it all started.
When not working, what do you like to do?
I love to read, binge watch Netflix, and travel with my husband.
Where can people learn more about your business?
