This week, we’re excited to speak with Zachary Davis, owner of Cafe de Novo. See how this blind business owner uses MileIQ to track his mileage.

Tell us about your business. What does a typical day look like for you?

My wife, 11-month-old, and myself start the café opening prep at 5:00 a.m.
each morning. My customers love their eggs, so I typically hand crack 25-30 dozen eggs each morning, in preparation for breakfast.

My role at our café is more administrative and technology related, with food
portioning and dish washing thrown in as needed. My wife is more hands on in the kitchen, preparing our daily entrees, and interacting directly with many customers.

How many miles do you drive in a typical week?

I drive about 50-100 work miles every week. We drive to stores like Sam’s Club, Restaurant Depo, and AceMart.

What’s changed since you started using MileIQ?

I’ve been able to easily, and accessibly, using iPhone’s Voiceover screen reading program for the blind, track my miles. I’ve been able to gain a much more accurate log of business verses personal drives.

What other apps do you recommend to other small business owners?

SalesVu is the POS app my café uses. It started as a very basic point of sales app, for iPad, but they are expanding into more detailed offerings.

I’m very much into cloud storage, utilizing not only Dropbox, but Google Drive, and OneDrive! Cloud storage is a very reliable way to have all of my business files and documentation, not only safely stored, but accessible from anywhere, at any time.

Intuit’s Online payroll app is also very helpful. I set up my employee’s profiles, and simply plug in hours worked each week, and the app does everything else!

What’s the biggest challenge you face running your business, and how
do you address it?

As a blind business owner, having dependable employees is critical.

I’m able to work most stations but I don’t—most sighted people would not like knowing a blind guy is grilling their burgers! We try to instill how crucial each role is to our team. We also provide financial and edible incentives for people who are punctual and dependable.

What do you enjoy the most about the kind of work you do?

It’s when a customer is really pleased with our service. When they comment on our freshly ground coffee, or the quality of their hamburger, or their appreciation of our healthy options, making a customer’s day is what I love about my business.

What tip would you share with other business owners?

When chasing the mighty dollar, never forget your people. They are the ones who are making it all happen.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I love to SCUBA dive, travel to Europe, feed my audio book addiction, and play with my 11-month-old daughter Kylee! I’m also really into going out to eat … go figure.
